An Event to Remember: How 22 Hands Up's Etiquette Workshop Changed the Way Our Kids See Themselves

Some events you attend. Others you carry with you. On May 23, 2026, the 22 Hands Up Organization hosted an etiquette and professional development workshop in Minden that landed firmly in the second category. The room filled early, the energy was contagious, and by the time the day was over, our young people had picked up lessons that will follow them into job interviews, college visits, dinner tables, and rooms they haven't even imagined walking into yet.

What started as a few shy faces and folded arms turned into a room full of confident handshakes, eye contact, and easy smiles. That transformation, watching kids realize they belong in any room they enter, is exactly why we do this work.

A Packed Room and an Open Mind

Long before the first session began, parents, mentors, and community leaders streamed through the doors alongside the youth. The turnout was one of the strongest we have seen, and it set the tone for the entire day. Kids who came in nervous quickly found themselves surrounded by adults who believed in them and peers who were just as ready to learn.

What the Kids Actually Learned

This was not a sit-still-and-listen kind of day. Presenters walked the youth through the real, practical skills that open doors, and then had them practice on the spot. The lessons were simple to say but powerful to live out:

• The first impression. How to offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, and introduce yourself with confidence, even when your nerves are telling you to look away.
• Table manners. Which fork to use, how to carry yourself at a meal, and why those small details matter when you're sitting across from someone who could change your future.
• Communication that connects. Speaking clearly, listening fully, and knowing how to carry a conversation with adults, peers, and people you've just met.
• Networking and respect. How to introduce others, remember names, say thank you, and leave every room better than you found it.

From Watching to Doing

The magic of the day came when the youth stopped watching and started doing. Kids stood up, introduced themselves, and put their new skills to the test in front of the room. There were a few nervous laughs at first, but with every turn the confidence grew. By the end, young people who had walked in quietly were volunteering to go next.
